Couldn’t be more happy with this purchase I’ve been waiting a long time to do.
Here’s our experience. First of all let me explain the reason I purchased the system. We are used to paddling tandem in a single canoe but my wife and I bought two Lure kayaks. For her the 11.5 and me the 13.5. We quickly found that we needed to purchase the rudders. My wife was having a real tough time tracking the 11.5. The 13.5 wan’t too bad. So we switched. I noticed the same. Next time out (with rudders installed) my wife was back in her 11.5. The rudders helped a lot. The 11.5 tracked more like the 13.5 at that point. Although my wife is not the strongest of paddlers, so I realized we would not be able to take too long of trips with the kayaks compared to what we were used to with paddling tandem. This brings me to the purchase of the Overdrive system… Our first time out we were really excited about trying it (overexcited). We took it out on a day when the winds were just too much. We launched inside of a cove which was safer and she learned how to lower the overdrive there (but was difficult because of the waves). We paddled outside of the cove and the winds quickly took us too far and we were going to be pushed into the shore some distance from where we launched. She figured out how to turn the boat around and face the wind just in time before hitting the shore. I told her to “punch it” and give it all she got (fearing the worse because she was still learning the system). She did so, and I quickly saw that she was making distance from the shore and heading the right direction. To make a long story short, she quickly left me in the dust paddling through the chop. I had a hard time catching up with her. Through calmer waters, I would not say she is quicker than me paddling. But through chop, it moves like a tank, steady an unstoppable. In summary, if you have strong legs, you’ll definitely notice a speed difference with the Overdrive peddle system, compared to what you can paddle. And especially through wind and chop. We’ve since taken both kayaks out on an all day trip and she was not too tired or soar the next day at all, a credit to the Overdrive system. I will say, I did have a technical issue with the first unit I was sent, but customer service quickly resolved it and my positive review will remain the same unless I have any further issues.
Works great. Really enjoy using this pedal drive system. I did find that adding lithium grease to all 3 grease points really helped with the break in process. Only major drawback has been bolts tend to loosen up quick on the pedal arms. Blue lock tight has helped
